FAQ
Fireplace — common questions
Can I put a fireplace anywhere in the house?
Mostly, though venting is the constraint. Direct-vent gas units are flexible; electric fireplaces need only a circuit, so they go almost anywhere.
Why won't my pilot light stay on?
Usually a failing thermocouple or thermopile, sometimes a dirty pilot assembly. Both are common and both are repairable.
Can I replace an old wood fireplace with gas?
Yes, that's one of the most common conversions we do. A gas insert fits into the existing masonry opening and is dramatically more efficient than an open wood fire.
How often should a gas fireplace be serviced?
Annually. Burners, pilot assemblies and venting all accumulate debris, and the safety check matters as much as the performance one.
Will an insert fit my existing fireplace?
Usually. We measure the opening and the flue, then match an insert to it. Our Surrey showroom has several running so you can compare before deciding.
Do gas fireplaces work in a power outage?
Many models do — millivolt ignition systems run without electricity. Worth asking about specifically if outages are a concern where you live.
Do electric fireplaces actually produce heat?
Yes, typically enough to take the chill off a room, though not to serve as primary heating for a whole home.
