Water Heaters — common questions
Tank or tankless?
Tankless costs more up front but never runs out and lasts roughly twice as long. Tank units are cheaper to install and simpler to service. Household size and hot water habits decide it more than anything else.
There's water around my tank — is that urgent?
Treat it as urgent. A leaking tank is usually failing rather than fixable, and tanks tend to go from seeping to flooding without much warning. Shut off the water supply and call us.
How long do water heaters last?
Tank units 8–12 years; tankless commonly 20 or more with annual descaling.
Will it really never run out?
Correct, provided it's sized for your peak simultaneous demand. Under-sizing is the reason people occasionally report otherwise.
Are electric water heaters expensive to run?
In BC, electricity rates make them more competitive than in much of North America. For homes without a gas connection they're generally the sensible option.
What is a natural draft water heater?
One that vents combustion gases up a conventional flue using natural buoyancy, rather than a powered fan. Simple and reliable, but it needs a suitable existing chimney or vent.
Do you service tankless units?
Yes, including the annual descaling that manufacturers require to keep the warranty intact.
